Six talented innovators are set battle it out in a competition run by UNICEF, where they will showcase their user-centered, refined and eco-friendly desk concepts.
The winning design will be selected for mass production and distributed to local schools in the country.
According to UNICEF, the initiative is part of the organisation’s efforts to improve education outcomes and provide comfortable learning environments for children.
The six innovators have been selected from a pool of 15 brilliant youth innovators who pitched their ideas last week in the UNICEF Malawi Desk Innovation Challenge.
“Now each of the finalists will receive K1.7 million to develop a working prototype of their innovative school desk design, built to be inclusive, ergonomic and sustainable,” said information on the organisation’s website.
The winning design will also receive support from industry players and the Ministry of Education.
“This is in line with our goal to supply enough desks for every child in Malawi,” said UNICEF.
The six finalists are Innocent Mandili, Precious Chisuse who co-presented with Kelvin Katunga, Charity Salome Baziwelo, Christopher Kaliati who co-presented with Upile Matululu, Alinuswe Masebo and Karen Katuwa.
Meanwhile, one of the finalists, Innocent Mandili who pitched a design called “MI IncluDesk 360” has expressed excitement with the opportunity.
“I am glad that I have been selected to present a prototype of my idea and I am hoping to win,” said Mandili.
