The United Nations (UN) has urged authorities to fully support innovators developing products that can contribute to Malawi’s economic growth.
UN Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh said this after touring Waste and Innovation Hub, a Blantyre-based company owned by youthful innovator Moses Kambani Kamchedzera.
The company produces briquettes, hair extensions, and other environmentally friendly products.
Adda-Dontoh expressed excitement with the products, highlighting the huge market potential for hair extensions in Malawi.
“Research shows that 90% of hair extensions used by women in Malawi are imported, indicating a vast market opportunity for innovators,” she said.
Adda-Dontoh also emphasised the importance of supporting environmentally friendly products like briquettes, saying they can help reverse climate change effects.
“If we support production of these products, we can mitigate climate change impacts globally,” she said.
Waste and Innovation Hub founder Moses Kamchedzera commended the UN for visiting, saying it has boosted the company’s morale to produce more.
“We appreciate the moral support offered by the UN Resident Coordinator,” said Kamchedzera.
A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in energy engineering from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), Kamchedzera founded the company in 2023.
