The Rotary Club of Lilongwe City Centre has donated medical supplies worth K3 million to Ukwe Health Centre in Traditional Authority Kabudula, Lilongwe.
The donation includes medical equipment, an oxygen delivery machine, a gas cylinder, and various cleaning materials.
This forms part of the Club’s broader initiative to construct a new maternity wing at the facility.
Speaking during the handover, Club President Martin Sapola said the health centre was adopted by the club two years ago after identifying several challenges, especially within the maternity ward.
“The current delivery room is too small and there is no proper waiting area for expectant mothers. Our goal is to support the facility by building a dedicated maternity wing,” he said.
Rotary International District 9210 Governor Marshall Chilenga noted that the donation is a testament to Rotary’s commitment to promoting maternal health and disease prevention.
Ukwe Health Centre in-charge George Duran welcomed the support, noting that the facility is struggling to serve more people due to limited space.
“The centre was established in 1977 and now serves over 51,000 people. Our maternity ward only has 10 beds, yet we recorded 63 deliveries last month,” he said.
Duran added that the proposed maternity wing will greatly improve service delivery and help reduce overcrowding at the facility.
