Malawi Team leaves Tuesday for Windhoek, Namibia for the 11th edition of the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games scheduled for July 4 to July 13.
A statement from Malawi National Council of Sports says the team, comprising 165 athletes and 37 officials, will travel aboard a chartered flight from Lilongwe to Namibia.
The statement further says football, Netball, Basketball, Lawn Tennis Judo, Boxing, Karate, Volleyball, E-sport and Table Tennis will be hosted in Windhoek while Swakopmund will cater for Swimming, Athletics, Special Olympics and E-sports.
Malawi will participate in 14 sporting disciplines Football (boys and girls), Basketball (boys and girls), Volleyball (boys and girls), Athletics, Boxing, Netball, Karate, Judo, Lawn Tennis, Para-Athletics, Special Olympics, Swimming and E-sports.
Speaking before departure, Malawi National Council of Sports Board Member Chigomezgo Nyasulu appealed to athletes to excel.
“Go and represent the country well. We want to see athletes from this team making it to the Youth Olympics in the near future,” she said.
On his part, Sports Council Chief Executive Officer Dr Henry Kamata said they expected the athletes to beat the 47 medals won during the 2022 Games Malawi hosted.
“We want you to enjoy the games, but at the same times realise that winning will bring joy to the country,” said Dr Kamata.
Malawi President Dr Lazarus Chakwera also hosted the team to State House while they were in camp to wish them well.
