Standard Bank Powers MUST Festival with K40 Million

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) will hold the MUST Cultural and Research Innovation Festival from August 22 to 23 at its campus in Ndata, Thyolo.

Standard Bank plc has donated K40 million towards the event.

The festival, themed “Igniting Scientific Innovation, Promoting Heritage towards Achieving Malawi 2063”, will combine scientific innovation with cultural heritage through activities such as a research dissemination conference, traditional dances, music and dance performances, cultural displays, traditional cuisines, games, poetry, a career expo and competitions showcasing scientific inventions.

Standard Bank Brands and Marketing Officer Yolanda Bulirani said the sponsorship aligns with their Joy of the Arts initiative, which seeks to preserve culture while encouraging creativity and innovation.

“We believe this is a great opportunity to preserve Malawi’s culture and instil Malawian pride in our youths whilst encouraging research and innovation in the sector,” Bulirani said.

The festival will also feature guest performances, including celebrated artist Sean Morgan who is also the university ‘s alumnus of Bachelor of Arts in Music, and will serve as a platform for innovators, researchers, and cultural performers to share their work with the public.

Dr Atikonda Mtenje-Mkochi, who approached Standard Bank for the sponsorship, hailed the bank’s support, noting that the institution is now the official sponsor of the festival.

“With this generous contribution, we can host a vibrant and impactful event that blends tradition with science, ultimately driving Malawi’s development agenda,” she said.

The MUST Directorate of Research, under Professor Alfred Maluwa, is also among the event’s sponsors, further highlighting the collaborative effort to make the festival a success.

Standard Bank has previously supported MUST, including contributions to the university’s Endowment Fund.

The upcoming festival is expected to draw students, researchers, cultural groups, and members of the public in celebrating both innovation and Malawi’s rich heritage.
