Scotland Clinic Donates Mattresses to Ndirande Health Centre

Ndirande Health Centre in Blantyre has received 30 high-quality hospital mattresses worth K4 million from St Andrews Clinics for Children (STACC) of Scotland, following a request made by a nurse during a recent visit by STACC researchers.

The donation, made through STACC Blantyre, a local charitable arm of the Scottish organisation, aims to enhance maternal health services at the busy health facility.

STACC Blantyre Director, Dr. Mwapasa Mipando, said the support is part of broader efforts to improve health service delivery in rural areas.

“This donation is not just a gesture of goodwill, it is a response to a need we witnessed during our visit to this health centre on 25th June 2024, when we discovered that healthcare workers were struggling to provide care due to lack of basic resources,” said Dr Mipando.

He further disclosed that STACC is also constructing a health post and staff houses in Masambuka Village, Machinga District, and called on other stakeholders to support such initiatives.

Matron for Ndirande Health Centre, Annielisa Majamanda said the mattresses will ease congestion in the maternity ward and improve the comfort of expectant mothers.

Hospital Management Committee Chairperson, Neckleson Mhango joined the call for more support from government and development partners, citing the ever-growing population in the area.

Majamanda and Mhango assured the donors that the mattresses will be taken care of and properly used.
