Sikhalo Foundation, a newly launched non-profit organisation, is making strides in supporting children living with developmental disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome.
It is also championing initiatives to address food insecurity in vulnerable communities.
Founded by Monica Tembo, a Malawian based in the United States, the foundation was inspired by her personal encounters with marginalised children who often lack access to basic nutrition and inclusive services.
“I wanted to create a platform that doesn’t just speak for the vulnerable but actively uplifts them,” she told ProjectM.
She said Malawi faces a significant information gap around developmental disabilities with many families suffering in silence due to stigma and limited awareness.
“Sikhalo Foundation aims to change this narrative by providing advocacy, education and inclusive support services, including early intervention awareness campaigns, caregiver education and training for frontline health workers and teachers,” she explained.
The foundation is also pioneering a foodbank initiative that goes beyond meal provision to promote dignity and long-term food sustainability.
“We partner with local farmers, restaurants and community volunteers and distribute nutritious meals while empowering households with seeds and agricultural training to grow their own food,” she said.
Currently active in Lilongwe and Blantyre, the organisation targets areas where access to education and healthcare for children with disabilities is limited.
She stressed that community involvement is central to its work, with local leaders, schools, churches, and youth groups engaged in ownership and advocacy efforts.
Looking ahead, Sikhalo Foundation plans to expand its programmes to other parts of Malawi and launch a YouTube series highlighting stories of children living with autism and down syndrome.
“I am inviting the public to support Sikhalo Foundation’s mission by participating in upcoming awareness campaigns, fundraising drives and following their activities on social media,” said Monica.
