MUST Alumnus Cashes In on Castor Beans

A Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) graduate, Alinafe Mtukula is putting knowledge he obtained from lecture room into practice after he opened a company that specialises in Castor oil production.

Mtukula, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and practices in 2022, hit the ground running a year later by launching castor oil production through a company called Nyasa Castor Oil.

Through his company, Mtukula processes locally grown castor beans into high-quality oil.

He has indicated that he decided to venture into the business after noticing the untapped market that exists in the sector.

“I always believe that innovation is not only about creating something new but recognising the value in what already exists within communities and transforming it into solutions that improve lives,” Mtukula said.

Nyasa Castor Oil collects dried castor beans from farmers which are then processed into usable oil.

“The dried seeds are crushed into a paste using mechanical press or expeller and then a special oil extraction process is initiated to extract quality oil,” said Mtukula.

Through his business, Mtukula has created a formal market for smallholder farmers while producing a product with both domestic and export potential.

“My work demonstrates how indigenous knowledge, entrepreneurship and innovation can come together to create sustainable economic opportunities,” he added.

Mtukula’s exploits have not gone unnoticed as MUST has committed to sponsor him to reach greater heights.

“His journey reflects the impact of MUST’s vision of producing graduates who do not only seek opportunities but create them,” the university stated.

Nyasa Castor Oil is available for purchase through special orders as the company works towards mass production.
