Malawi’s Vice-President, Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi, popularly known by his stage name Manganya, made a striking return to the theatre stage on Monday, July 7 at the Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre. This time, it was not only for fun but also save a life.
Dr. Usi joined top actors such as Flora Suya, Giling’ande, Nanyoni, Ching’aning’ani and Sasoka in a drama show called The Theatrical Charity Show, aimed to raise money for fellow actor Mussa Penoh, known by many as Dimingu from the legendary Pamajiga series.
Penoh has been unwell for nearly seven years and urgently needs K18 million for specialised treatment abroad. Through a soul-stirring performance in the stage play Nsalu, Vice-President Usi reminded the audience of the power of theatre.
“Let’s not forget those who once brought joy into our homes. True friendship is shown in times like these,” said Dr. Usi, who went a step further by pledging to cover part of Penoh’s medical expenses.
The drama Nsalu, a gripping piece centered on loyalty and marital struggles, left the audience in laughter and reflection, particularly through Usi’s portrayal of a husband causing havoc in a dysfunctional relationship. The audience laughed, clapped and some were moved to tears.
The Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule also graced the event, pledging K250,000 to support the cause.
With tickets going at K5,000 for Standard and K20,000 for VIP, the show drew hundreds of patrons, showing how deeply Malawians still value performances in drama, dance, comedy and poetry.
