Malawi Face South Africa in the Africa Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 football on Sunday after beating Zambia 2-1.
Mwiso Mhango was the toast of the day when he inspired Malawi to a historical victory.
Malawi took an early lead in the third minute through Mwisho Mhango with solo effort.
But the Young Flames’ were dealt a big blow after their counterparts equalised before half-time through James Sibeene.
But Malawi restored the lead with Mhango’s second goal which proved decisive to put them on course for their first title of the competition after reaching the final 14 years ago.
Madalitso Safuli capped Malawi’s performance by being voted Player of the Match, the fourth time for Malawi to claim the accolade.
Malawi beat Zimbabwe and Namibia and drew against Angola to top their group with seven points. Angola finished second on inferior goal aggregate after a tie with Malawi.
Both qualified for the semifinals but Angola failed to set up a repeat of the group stage clash after losing to South Africa 2-1.
The Under-20 team coach Millias Pofera Jegwe breathed a sigh of relief after the victory.
“We didn’t play the game according to plan. We wanted to kill off the game in the early stages but it didn’t work. We didn’t play well but after the half-time talk, the boys upped the tempo and got it right,” he said.
