Likoma Island Soap Maker Eyes to Raise Production

A young entrepreneur from Likoma Island, Mathews Adams, is calling for support to acquire a soap-making machine and protective equipment to boost his small-scale production business, which is currently struggling to meet growing demand.

Adams, who produces soap manually alongside his mother, Gladys Belo, says he has managed to make about 90 bars using locally available materials.

He notes that while the business is still small, interest from customers continues to rise, making it difficult to keep up with orders under the current production method.

He believes that with proper machinery, he could significantly increase production and expand his operations while also creating employment opportunities for young people on the island.

Local residents have already expressed satisfaction with the product. One customer, Elizabeth Salesi of Makungulu, described the soap as high quality and affordable, saying it has become her household’s preferred choice.

Adams hopes that support from well-wishers or development partners will help him transition from manual production to a more efficient and sustainable small-scale manufacturing drive.
