Likoma Agri Entrepreneur says fish cage farming has the great potential in creating jobs and improving livelihoods for young people on Likoma Island.
The youth-led enterprise recently harvested close to 20,000 fish from its cages in Lake Malawi, a development that Farm Manager Asante Mankhokwe described as encouraging and a sign that aquaculture can become a reliable source of income for local communities.
Mankhokwe said the project has not only provided fish for the market but has also equipped young people with innovative skills in fish production and business management.
He added that the initiative is helping to unlock the economic opportunities that exist within the fisheries sector.
According to Mankhokwe, the group remains determined to expanding its operations and increase production in future cycles.
He said experience drawn from the recent season will help strengthen the project and improve efficiency going forward.
While the enterprise experienced challenges such as transportation difficulties and damage to one of its fish cages, Mankhokwe said the obstacles have motivated the team to find lasting solutions and build a stronger operation.
One of the beneficiaries, Moses Sauli, said the project has already made a positive difference in the lives of participating youths.
He expressed optimism that with continued financial and technical support, fish cage farming can create more employment opportunities and contribute significantly to economic growth on Likoma Island.
