Kasungu Girls Trained in Irrigation Farming

In a move aimed at promoting economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods among young women, Girls on the Lead Young Feminist Movement has trained 70 girls in irrigation farming under its project, Her Livestock, Her Independence.

The training, conducted in the areas of Senior Chief Kaomba and Senior Chief Lukwa in Kasungu, focused on equipping participants with practical skills in irrigation techniques, organic manure production, and crop management. The initiative is supported by IM Swedish Development Partners.

Talumba Kateya, the Movement’s Communication Officer, said the training is expected to transform the lives of the young women by enhancing their agricultural productivity and financial stability.

“This training will teach them how to produce organic manure, enabling them to achieve higher yields and increase their profits,” said Kateya.

One of the participants, Maria Kwapata, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, describing the training as a life-changing experience.

“This initiative will improve our financial stability and give us control over our economic futures,” she said.

The project empowers girls to become self-reliant by giving them hands-on experience in sustainable farming practices, including the use of Mbeya and Mbokashi organic fertilizers. These natural inputs are known to improve soil fertility, resulting in better crop yields.

According to the Movement, the girls are showing remarkable progress and determination.

“Our girls are not just learning, they are mastering the use of sustainable techniques and dominating the farming game. They are breaking barriers, shattering limits, and taking charge of their futures,” said Kateya.

Girls on the Lead emphasised that the training is not just about farming, but also about unlocking the economic potential of young women and paving the way for a more prosperous future for them and their communities.

With continued support and guidance, the Movement hopes the participants will become role models and changemakers in their communities, demonstrating the power of skills development in transforming lives.
