Kamuzu Banda’s Kasungu Home to Become Museum

One of the country’s leading financial services providers, National Bank of Malawi (NBM) has announced plans to turn the historic home of Malawi’s first President Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda into a Museum and Library.

The bank intends to transform “Nguru Ya Nawambe” Palace located in Kasungu District into one of the country’s leading Museums.

Through a statement, NBM has since indicated that the entity will be managed by a special trust called Nguru Ya Nawambe Museum Trust.

“National Bank is, therefore, inviting consultancy applications for a management consultant to spearhead the setup of Nguru Ya Nawambe Museum Trust that will be tasked with the job of running the Museum and Library,” said the announcement.

The establishment of the institution follows instructions reportedly left by Dr Kamuzu Banda through his will.

“Interested individuals or firms hoping to offer the consultancy services have until the 4th of July 2025 to apply,” said the announcement.

Meanwhile, a family representative, Ken Kandodo said the establishment of the Museum would help in preserving the legacy of the country’s first president.

“It will also obviously attract both local and international visitors, boosting the country’s tourism in the process,” he said.

Kandodo has since urged Malawians to patronise institutions where records about the country’s history are kept.

“As a nation, we can properly develop if we learn from our past and that’s why institutions like Nguru Ya Nawambe Museum and Library are coming in to provide that history,” added Kandodo.

Tapiwa Kaulimbo, a student from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) has expressed excitement with the news, saying the establishment of the Museum and Library will offer students a wide range of information.
