A Lilongwe-based organisation, Girl Power for Change has donated school uniforms to disadvantaged learners at Yepa Primary School in Lilongwe in a bid promote to promote education.
The organisation’s founder and executive director, Linda Phiri said the donation was also made to empower the girls by, among others, providing them with essential resource required to succeed in their academic pursuits.
Phiri said, through the donation, Girl Power for Change hopes to bridge the gap in education access and opportunities for underprivileged students.
“For us we believe a uniform instils a crucial sense of dignity, belonging and confidence, enabling girls to attend school without the shame of tattered clothes or fear of standing out due to poverty,” she said.
Phiri said apart from the donation, the organisation has also equipped the girls with knowledge on the need to stay in school.
“As an organisationation, we are always fighting to keep girls in school, empower them to stay focused on school and participate fully in classroom activities,” said Phiri.
She said the organisation would undertake similar initiatives in other schools across Malawi as one way of helping girls to remain in school.
“This is just the beginning, our wish is to break the cycle of inequality and keeping girls in school where they belong,” she added.
One of the beneficiaries, a Standard Five learner thanked Girl Power for Change, saying the uniform will help her concentrate in class.
“I was one of the learners who used to skip school because I didn’t have a school uniform and that will change come next term,” she said.
