A Lilongwe-based youth-led organization, Girl Power for Change has donated reusable sanitary pads to female learners at Kwanjana Primary School in Thyolo district in a bid to promote menstrual hygiene.
The organisation said the donation targeted girls who have reached adolescent age and have been facing difficulties to access sanitary materials during mensural period.
a representative for the organisation Shakira Robert said they decided to make the donation as one way of helping female learners stay in school.
“We know that a lot of female learners usually skip school during menstrual period due to lack of sanitary materials and our organisation is here to change that,” she said.
The organisation also encouraged the girls to prioritise school.
“Our mission is simple, yet deeply profound, to see the girlchild rise from the classroom benches of primary school to the halls of the university,” said Robert.
She said through menstrual hygiene awareness, empowerment and economic support, the organisation hopes to light flames of hope in communities where such help is needed.
Speaking on behalf of learners, Caroline Ndende, who is in Standard 7, commended Girl Power for Change for making the donation.
“This donation will go a long way towards helping us overcome physical and mental stress we go through when we are menstruating,” said Ndende.
Tadala Smith, a teacher who spoke on behalf of the school’s headteacher, urged the organization to continue supporting the learners.
