In the bustling creative landscape of Malawi’s fashion industry, a quiet revolution is taking shape one stitch at a time through the gifted hands of Chifundo Khanje.
The 30-year-old fashion designer, whose brand Meraki Creations, is steadily becoming a symbol of purpose-driven creativity and inclusive empowerment.
Raised in the city of Blantyre but now rooted in Mulanje, Chifundo is more than just a designer. She is a mentor, a visionary, and an artist in every sense of the word. Though she holds a Diploma in Nutrition and Food Security, it was her natural talent in pencil drawing that first hinted at the art waiting to bloom in other forms.
“I have always seen the world through the lens of art. Fashion simply became the channel that allowed me to express what was already in me,” says Chifundo.
Her journey into fashion began unexpectedly. While attending church, she learned tailoring from a Catholic nun who was teaching women in the community, Chifundo was the only young girl among the beneficiaries. From those humble beginnings, a creative empire was born.
She started tailoring in 2014, and by 2020, she had branded her work under the name Meraki Creations, opening social media accounts and establishing herself in the business.
At Meraki, she specialises in custom-made garments and accessories, often transforming customer ideas into works of art. But her vision does not stop there.
“I really want to branch into Ready-To-Wear fashion. Imagine walking into a store and picking something off the rack with that Meraki touch. That’s the dream,” she says.
Yet dreams often come with challenges. Chifundo speaks candidly about the struggles fashion designers face, from customers who expect high-end results with poor materials to the skyrocketing cost of fabric.
Her solution? Clear communication and honesty. “It’s all about finding a middle ground with clients. We need to talk, to explain and educate where we can,” she says.
Beyond fashion, Chifundo is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of designers, especially through her work with ANZATHU Charity Organisation which trains both hearing and deaf girls, championing inclusivity and empowerment.
Together with her team, they have showcased their designs at events such as All Shades of Beautiful, a fashion show by Xandria that celebrates diversity and body positivity.
“Fashion has opened doors for me career-wise, spiritually, and socially. It has given me the chance to pass on my knowledge and be part of something bigger than myself,” Chifundo explains with pride.
For aspiring designers, her message is as bold as her creations: “Just start from where you are. Some began with hand sewing, others partnered with tailors. Don’t wait to have everything.
“Start with your idea. Pray about it. Write the vision down and watch how God makes it happen.”
With every stitch, Chifundo Khanje is not just building a fashion brand , she’s sewing a legacy of faith, artistry, and empowerment that is inspiring a generation to follow their dreams, one thread at a time.
