Former Football Players Unite for a Brighter Future

Government has urged retired football players to serve as role models for the current generation, emphasizing the importance of their influence in maintaining the game’s appeal.

Minister of Sports and Youth Uchizi Mkandawire made the remarks Saturday in Lilongwe during the inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) of an association of retired footballers operating under the banner, Football Legends Association (FLA).

Addressing the gathering, Mkandawire emphasised the crucial role former football players play in shaping the next generation.

“As legends, you have a responsibility to inspire and guide the current crop of players because your experience and expertise can help keep the game attractive and vibrant,” he said.

The minister commended the legends for forming the association, saying it is helping in taking care of retired footballers in need of help.

FLA Board Chairperson, Jim Kalua echoed the Minister’s sentiments, highlighting the unity among the legends as a key factor in the association’s success since it’s formation.

“Being an association formed just 4 years ago, we are proud of what we have achieved so far and we are committed to supporting our members in need,” said Kalua.

Christopher Madalitso Kuyera, Football Association of Malawi’s First Vice President, reaffirmed the governing body’s commitment to looking after the plight of legends.

“We value your contributions to Malawian football and will continue to support your endeavours,” Kuyera said.

Speaking on behalf of the legends, Mphatso Namwali, a former Lilongwe City Council Football Club, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets (formerly Bata Bullets) and Flames international, described the formation of the FLA as exciting.

“Coming together under one umbrella has given us a stronger voice and a platform to make a difference,” said Namwali.

The AGM, themed “Legends Unite; Building a Brighter Future”, gave an opportunity to the association’s members to discuss ways that can help former footballers’ welfare.

Legendary players and administrators, including Young Chimodzi, Joseph Kamwendo, Kinnah Phiri, Lawrence Waya and Chiukepo Msowoya attended.
