Hassan Bakali, a resident of Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Zomba, has embarked on a mission to restore forests devastated by charcoal burning in his area.
Bakali’s journey began in 2023, after he gained insight into the effects of climate change.
A former charcoal seller, Bakali has transformed his life by abandoning his old business and embracing environmental conservation.
“I used to sell dozens of bags of charcoal in Zomba city, unaware that my business was contributing to climate change,” he said.
Bakali’s perspective shifted in 2023 when drought affected his farming activities, making him realize the harsh reality of climate change.
He then sought training from a non-governmental organisation, learning alternative business methods that don’t harm the environment.
He started a tree seedling business, which evolved into a woodlot.
“I now have several hectares of trees and thousands of seedlings, which I sell and donate to local schools,” Bakali said.
The environmentalist has also ventured into beekeeping, utilizing one of the regenerated indigenous forests to support his initiatives.
Elliot Tandani, a renowned environmental expert has praised Bakali’s efforts, calling him a role model.
“His story can inspire others to adopt environmentally friendly practices and abandon destructive businesses,” Tandani said.
