Eleven Malawi University of Science and Technology students have secured scholarships to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
A statement from MUST, says the recipients have got the scholarships from Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) programme.
Six students Jacqueline Mango and Sabina Kalimi (female) and Yohane Giraneza, Eliezar Bernard (male) from Dzaleka Refuge Camp alongside Malawians Hope Kafumbu and Ruth Kachigunda (female) will pursue Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology.
While two Malawi female students Stella Cadono and Takondwa Mendulo alongside male Malawian student Gift Chibisa will undertake Master of Science in Applied Chemical Engineering.
Two Malawian students Mercy Limited and Emily Lungu, who will study, Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, complete the list.
The 11 are among the first cohort of the scholarships under the programme, which is partnership of Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture and Mastercard Foundation implemented by 12 universities in African countries.
MUST is the only university implementing the TAGDev 2.0 programme which comprises Scholarship and System Transformation and Agri-Food Systems and Entrepreneurship Centre (ASEC).
MUST’s Associate Programme Coordinator Dr Cecelia Maliwi-Nyirenda said the university has mechanisms to support the students academically, emotianally and socially to ensure that they succeed.
One of the students, Jacqueline was quoted in a statement as having said that she was overwhelmed with emotions when she made the list.
She said: “As a refuge, life often feels uncertain and opportunities like this so not come easily. So, that moment felt like a door had finally opened after so many had closed.
“The scholarship was more than financial support, it was a sign that someone believed in me and my potential.”
TAGDev 2.0 Programme is a 10-year initiative that seeks to strengthen universities and Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurial Training institutions to serve communities better.
The scholarship will be available in the next five years.
