Youth-Led Venture Thrives in Juice Production

A Zomba-based youth-led company, Domasi Food Enterprise is making a mark by turning indigenous fruits into tasty juices.

The company produces juice using raw materials such as Bwemba (Tamarindus Indica) and Malambe (Baobab) which is currently being sold on the local market.

Led by Alinafe Kumwembe, the company has grown into one of the country’s leading producers and suppliers of juices.

Kumwembe has indicated an alliance of youths came together in 2023 to establish the company after growing frustrated with a lack of employment opportunities on the job market.

“So, we decided to use cheap and available resources to launch our entrepreneurship venture; hence, settling for juice production,” she said.

Kumwembe said due to lack of proper machinery, the company began producing the juice using simple methods.

“Everything we were doing was done manually but we didn’t compromise on quality,” said Kumwembe.

The company produces over 2,000 litres of juice per week which when packaged, fetches enough income to sustain its operations.

Domasi Food Enterprise’s exploits compelled the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) to give the company a grant of K7.5 million earlier this year.

“We used part of the grant to purchase machines that have helped us to boost production from 2,000 litres per week to over 8,000 litres per week,” she added.

The company has five full-time employees and dozens of others on part-time across Zomba, Machinga and Phalombe.
