Temwa Inspires Kansas To US Women’s League Victory

Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga inspired her team Kansas City Current to a 2-0 victory over Portland Thorns on Sunday to cement her Golden Boot defence chase.

The Malawian sensation notched her 12th league goal of the season in the 71st minute for KC Current’s second goal.

Elie Wheeler, who scored the team’s first goal in the 55th second, the team’s second fasted goal in history, provided an assist to Chawinga.

The victory also marked the team’s 10 unbeaten run of the season from the 17 games played in the campaign which has put them in the run to defend the title.

The team paid tribute to both Chawinga and Wheeler for reaching their respective milestones.

“The Kansas City Current win in Portland for a big three points! Wheeler scores within the first minute of the game and Temwa Chawinga adds another in the second half to shut out Portland Thorns. Chawinga is unstoppable. Scoring machine doing what she knows best,” reads a post on the club’s Facebook page.

However, Temwa is tied with Gotham FC’s Esther Gonzalez at 12 goals but KC Current’s 43 points maintained the 12-point lead ahead of their closest rivals Washington.

San Diego Wave, who lost to Racing Louisville 1-0, are third with 29 points, Zambian star Barbara Banda’s Orlando Pride lie fourth with 28 points and Portland Thorns are fifth with 26 points.

Utah Royals anchor the table with eight points, Chicago Stars are second from bottom with 10 points while Bay FC perch on 12th position in the 14 team league.
