HB Space TL, a Zomba based tech company, has developed a smart bin innovation called the Mental Smart Bin, a sensor-powered waste bin that opens automatically when someone approaches.
Hudson Mwangalika CEO of HB Space TL has told ProjectM that the innovation aims to improve hygiene and modernise waste disposal systems in public spaces, schools, hospitals and markets.
Mwangalika, says the inspiration behind the innovation came from observing daily challenges in Malawian communities.
“My inspiration came from observing daily challenges in our communities, overflowing bins that never close properly. I wanted to use technology to solve these problems in ways that are affordable and made right here in Malawi, ” said Mwangalika.
The Mental Smart Bin is designed to enhance hygiene and make waste disposal more efficient. With a working prototype already complete, HB Space TL now seeks partnerships and investments to begin mass production and implementation.
Professor Chomora Mikeka, Director of Science Technology and Innovation in the Ministry of Education, has backed HB Space TL’s innovation, citing its potential impact on Malawi’s tech-driven development.
“I saw a clear spark of locally driven innovation in what Hudson and his team were doing. These are not just prototypes they are solutions to real-life challenges in our communities.
“Backing such efforts aligns with our national goals for tech-driven development and empowering youth through science and innovation,” explained Professor Mikeka.
The company plans to expand its reach throughout Malawi and into the region, while maintaining a 30% stake in all projects.
With its innovative approach to waste management, HB Space TL hopes to make a significant impact in Malawi’s tech sector.
