Silver Strikers have confirmed the departure of their star midfielder, Chimwemwe ‘Gattuso’ Idana, who is set to join Zambian side Zanaco FC on a two-year contract.
Idana leaves the TNM Super League champions after a successful stint that saw him play a key role in ending the club’s 11-year league title drought for the Area 47-based outfit.
The former Malawi international made his final appearance for the Central Bankers on Sunday, helping them to a 2-0 victory over FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the First Capital Bank 30th Anniversary Celebrations Cup at Bingu National Stadium.
This followed another standout performance in a league match against Karonga United where he was named Player of the Match.
Silver Strikers Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Chimimba, confirmed the move but remained tight-lipped on the financial details of Idana’s contract with Zanaco.
Idana’s journey with Silver Strikers began in 2023 when he joined on loan from Tanzanian outfit Mbeya FC before signing a permanent deal later that year.
He quickly rose to become one of the most valuable players at the club, leading them to success both domestically and in cup competitions.
This is how Silver Strikers management has described him: “Chimwemwe Idana has been an exceptional servant of this club. From the moment he arrived at Silver Strikers, first on loan in February 2023, and later as a permanent player, he brought immense quality, leadership and character to our midfield”.
“His final performance against Karonga United was a perfect farewell a man of the match display with a goal to his name.
“He leaves us as a champion and a Player of the Season, having made a lasting mark on the hearts of our supporters. We wish Chimwemwe nothing but success as he embarks on this new chapter with Zanaco FC.”
Reacting to the transfer, football analyst Mabvuto Kambuwe commended Idana’s achievements, describing the move as a deserved opportunity for the player to further his career internationally.
“Idana has consistently raised the bar in the local league, and it’s no surprise that a top club like Zanaco has shown interest. He deserves this opportunity to showcase his talent on a bigger stage,” Kambuwe said.
Idana, who started his professional career with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves in 2017, was promoted to the senior team in the 2018/2019 season and later earned caps for the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames.
His time with Silver Strikers from 2023 to 2025 will be remembered for his leadership on the field, crucial goals and match-winning performances
