Malawi National Women’s Football put the icing on the cake for their fairytale run on their debutant Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) by storming into the final with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Algeria.
After a balanced early exchanges between the two teams, Malawi made a warning shot when Tabitha Chawinga wasted a golden opportunity in the fourth minute.
However, the Scorchers captain Tabitha made amends in the 33rd minute when she took Malawi into the lead.
Her sister Temwa, cushioned the lead on the dot of the first half to give Malawi fans high hopes and on the verge of making history.
Algeria got back into the match after scoring in the 60th minute through Ikram Adjabi, but Tabitha restored the goal-cushion with the third goal in the 76th minute.
But the Scorchers will miss wonderkid France-based Rose Kabzere who was red-carded for crude tackle in the first half in which another Algerian player was shown marching orders.
Malawi, who qualified for the 2027 Brazil World Cup, face Cameroon on Sunday in the final who beat hosts Morocco 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw after open play and extra time failed to separate the two times.
The Scorchers fairytale run started by beating 10-time champions Nigeria 3-2 in the opening group C match, Egypt 3-1 in their second match but lost 2-1 to Zambia but made it to the quarterfinals on head-to-head goal difference.
They beat another seasoned campaigner Ghana from behind to reach the semifinals.
