Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya has said his campaign to improve the welfare of women’s football has come to pass.
Haiya said this in an exclusive interview with Zodiak, citing the Scorchers players who received over K60 million, among others from game bonuses and allowances at the 2027 Morocco Women’s Africa Cup of Nations held recently.
While he did not go into details, Haiya touted his administration’s efforts to secure international friendly matches during Fifa-sanctioned days which was not the case before his election as FAM president in 2023.
He also said the association has provided a conducive environment for youth players to get motivated and play women’s football.
Meanwhile, Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili will not take charge of the team at the 2027 Brazil World Cup because he is not qualified to meet Fifa requirements of CAF A.
But Haiya has clarified that this would affect him to be part of the delegation.
FAM Technical Sub-Committee will decide to offer a position for him in the team.
Malawi marked a sensational Wafcon debutant appearance at the continental showpiece by reaching the final in which they lost 3-0 to seasoned campaigners Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses.
They beat eight-time champions Nigeria, Egypt lost to rivals Zambia in the group stages but went on to beat Ghana in the quarterfinals and Algeria in the semi-finals to book an automatic place in the 2027 World Cup.
According to Fifa competition rules, each player who will make the squad, will pocket a $30,000 appearance fee.
