Despite being a school dropout, Isaac Khalana Nkhotakota, Malawi has built a successful soap-making business driven by his passion and determination.
Khalani’s soap-making journey began in 2014, with a small amount of capital and willingness to learn. He has since developed a range of products, including liquid soap, powder soap, and tablet soap.
The 33-year-old monthly production includes 50 tablets, 60 litres of liquid soap, and 50 kilogrammes of powder soap.
In addition to manufacturing soap, Khalani also trains others who are interested in starting their own soap making businesses. He credits YouTube and Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira for teaching him valuable skills in soap production.
“Soap-making has been a game-changer for me. It is not just a business, but a way to empower others in my community,” said Khalani.
Khalani’s business operates from his home village of Mwansambo, where he sells his products directly to customers. One of his satisfied customers, Mary Chimbalu, praised the quality of Khalani’s soap products.
“Isaac’s soap products are gentle on my skin and have a pleasant smell. I prefer his products over others because of their quality and affordability and on the other hand I am supporting my home industry,” said Chimbalu.
Khalani manufactures both bathing and washing soap and he currently employs four full-time workers and two part-time workers, contributing to the local economy.
“My dream is to export my products from Malawi and create a name for myself in the regional market. I am working hard to make that a reality,” Khalani revealed.
As Khalani continues to grow his business, he is in the process of registering his products to ensure that they meet the necessary standards.
According to Khalani his story is a testament to the power of passion and determination in overcoming adversity. Despite facing financial challenges early in life, he has built a successful business and is now creating opportunities for others in his community.
