NYCOM, AGRA Partner to Equip Youth with Agri-Skills

At least 1,600 young people across Malawi are expected to undergo special training aimed at equipping them with knowledge on entrepreneurship, life skills and mindset change.

The training is being championed by the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) through a special initiative called Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)-Sustainability Growing Africa’s Food Systems.

Through the initiative, NYCOM is equipping the youth with skills to thrive in agriculture and entrepreneurship.

Rex Chapota, NYCOM executive director said the organisation is conducting the training to fullfil its strategic plan on youth economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

“We are targeting young people, especially young women across multiple districts to thrive in the agri-food sector,” he said.

Chapota said currently, dozens of youth from several districts across Malawi have already undergone training in mindset change and agricultural innovation.

“In Machinga, 60 youth leaders have already undergone the training, same as Dedza, Salima and Kasungu where youth leaders have been equipped with knowledge,” said Chapota.

He said at the end of the trainings, NYCOM wants to build a society of youth with skills to drive innovation and build sustainable agri-businesses.

“We are also hoping to have youths who are capable of creating opportunities for their peers, strengthen Malawi’s food systems and youth-led development,” he added.

One of the beneficiaries of the trainings, Tapiwa Chabinga has hailed NYCOM, saying the initiative has opened her eyes.

“From now onwards, I will be able to sustain my business, unlike in the past when I used to struggle a lot,” said Chabinga.
