New FAM Secretary General Set To Get Down To Business

Newly recruited Football Association of Malawi General Secretary Abdul Chiwalo is expected to get down to business from 18 August following his appointment two weeks ago.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) appointed the new General Secretary, replacing Alfred Gunda who left after the expiry of his contract.

In a statement, FAM President Fleetwood Haiya said the appointment of Chiwalo follows his proposal and endorsed by the executive committee.

“The executive committee of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has unanimously appointed Mr Abdul Chiwalo as the new General Secretary following my proposition as FAM President, in accordance with the provisions of our statutes. The appointment is effective 18th August 2025,” said Haiya.

The FAM President said Chiwalo, who served as newly created Eastern Region Football Association Chairperson, is highly qualified for the position.

Said Haiya: “Mr Chiwalo is an ACCA Chartered Accountant and holds a Master’s Degree in Finance Management, a Master’s Degree in Economic Policy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

“He brings with him over 15 years of experience in key managerial and decision-making positions. Prior to his appointment, he served as Management Accountant at MERA [Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority].”

He also paid tribute to Gunda, who served the organisation for about 10 years after former FAM President Walter Nyamilandu also appointed him while he was the association’s executive committee member.

“On behalf of the executive committee and entire football fraternity, I wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr Gunda for his unwavering dedication and invaluable contribution to the transformation of football in Malawi,” said Haiya.

A number of football fraternity backed his appointment, saying his CV is impressed and with support from experienced football administrators, he can adapt to football administration.
