MUST Students Visit Mbona Cultural Site for Practical Learning

Students from the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) have visited the Khurubvi Mbona Cultural Site in Nsanje as part of efforts to gain practical experience in Malawian culture, heritage and indigenous knowledge.

The students are from the Bingu School of Culture and Heritage, pursuing Bachelor of Arts degrees in Archives and Records Management, Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Cultural Economy.

The educational visit took place on 26 September 2026 and aimed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-life cultural practice.

During the visit, the students were taken through the history, traditions and cultural practices associated with the Mbona Shrine, one of Malawi’s most revered cultural heritage sites.

Second-year Cultural Economy student, Talandira Kubalasa, described the trip as highly beneficial to their studies.

“The trip was beneficial because practical learning helps students understand concepts better,” said Kubalasa.

Another student, third-year Nathan Kaunda, said the experience opened his eyes to the economic value of culture.

“The visit also helped me appreciate how cultural practices can contribute to the cultural economy,” Kaunda said.

The university says such field visits are crucial for preserving Malawian heritage while equipping students with hands-on skills in cultural documentation and management.
