Malawi made history by qualifying for their first Women’s African Cup of Nations 2026 Morocco tournament.
The draw in group C against rivals and neighbors Zambia, seasoned campaigners Egypt and Nigeria, sent cold chills down the spine of Malawi fans. Very little was expected from them.
But a historical 3-2 victory over Nigeria’s Super Falcons instilled hope. They followed up with another convincing big 3-1 victory over Egypt in the second match with a 10-player squad after one player was red-carded.
Despite losing 2-1 to Zambia in their last group match, Malawi qualified for the quarterfinals in dramatic style by topping the group on head-to-head goal difference, leaving Zambia and Egypt eliminated.
More history awaited Malawi, who are inspired by the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and her younger sister Temwa, when they dazzled the Black Women of Ghana 2-1 from behind.
The quarterfinals victory, to stake a claim in the semifinals, earned them an automatic 2027 World Cup finals maiden appearance.
Now, the nation of Malawi and the world await with abaited breath for another when they face Algeria in their quest to reach the final and a maiden Wafcon title.
