The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has donated gas cylinders and stoves to the Malawi National Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers.
The handover ceremony took place at MERA offices in Lilongwe on Saturday.
MERA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Dad Chinthambi, said the Authority decided to support the team following their impressive performance at the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals in Morocco.
The Scorchers finished second at the tournament and qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“We decided to donate to the Scorchers following their impressive performance at WAFCON where they finished second and qualified for the World Cup,” Chinthambi said.
Chinthambi described the Scorchers’ performance at WAFCON finals as impressive.
“They made the nation proud,” said Chinthambi.
He said MERA will continue to support sports development in the country as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Scorchers vice-captain, Temwa Chawinga, hailed MERA for the support, saying the donation will motivate the players.
“We thank MERA for this timely support because this donation will go a long way in motivating us as players to work even harder,” said Chawinga.
The donation comes after the Scorchers defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
