Malawi National Netball Team finished seventh at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scoland after beating hosts nature 50-47.
Led by seasoned Australia-based shooter, Mwawi Kumwenda M’bwana, Malawi registered a 17-12 victory in the first quarter and 13-11 second quarter win to go for half time recess leading 30-23.
But the hosts reorganised in the third and fourth quarters to force a 12-all draws which were enough to carry the day.
The Queens beat Northern Ireland and Tonga and Scotland but fell to Australia and South Africa.
However, Malawi who are ranked ninth in the world having dropped from sixth to seventh and eighth in recent years, achieved their mission.
Head coach Deborah Fuller was over the moon with the performance she described as impressive.
“I am so proud of the Queens and the management team. They took on new standards,” she said.
MBC sports analyst Patrick Simango also applauded the Queens performance.
He said: “Congratulations to the Queens fo humbling Scotland with a confident display. But what has changed in terms of our playing style. I still see the Queens playing unorthodox netball which has been our trafition for ages.”
For Mwawi Kumwenda M’bwana, it was a proud moment as she said returned to national duty since 2022 in honour of her two-year-old son.
