Malawian star Mwisho Mhango was named Cosafa Under-20 Player of the Tournament and Golden Boot Award.
This was a consolation after Malawi failed to win Gold in the Africa Union Sports Council Region 5 Games they lost to South Africa 3-0 in the final at Namibia National University ground.
The Cosafa tournament is played as part of Region 5 Games.
Mhango, who is Ascent Academy player, won two Player of the matches and was touted as the tournament’s sensational player.
The Under-20 team manager Mike Banda applauded the Mhango’s feat and the team’s sensational run in the competition.
Said Banda: “We didn’t win the gold medal, but if someone had told me at the start of the tournament that we’d take home silver, I would’ve been thrilled.
“Overall, it was an incredible team and individual effort. A silver medal for the team, four Man of the Match awards, top goal scorer, and Player of the Tournament—this has been an incredibly successful campaign. Massive respect to the boy—I’m so proud of you all!”
Apart from winning Gold, South Africa were named Fair Team of the Tournament while their goalkeeper Selethu Radebe also got Golden Glove Award.
In women’s football, Zambia beat South African 2-0 to claim Gold, a feat capped by their individual award dominance when Saliya Mwanza was named Player of the Tournament, Ruth Mukoma bagged Golden Boot while Margaret Phiri was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament and hosts Namibia were awarded Fair Player Team award.
