Malawi’s FIDE (International Chess Federation) Master Joseph Mwasi proved his prowess after emerging champion at the 2026 Zambia Open Chess Championship held over the weekend in Lusaka, Zambia.
Mwale outsmarted a field of 88 players from Malawi, Zimbabwe, the Democratic of Congo, the United States and hosts Zambia.
A statement from Malawi National Council of Sports said Mwale’s victory would inspire him to prepare for more international tournaments.
“Winning always gives you confidence in international competitions. It was a tough tournament, but I had to dig deep and stay focused to come on top,” he said.
On his part, Chess Association of Malawi General Secretary Gift Howahowa said the victory underlines that Malawi has outstanding players who can compete in international competitions.
He said: “This is a proud moment for Malawi. The tournament attracted players from five countried and featured some of Zambia’s top-ranked players, including International Masters Chitumbo Mwali, Richmond Phiri and Kelvin Chumfwa, FIDE Master Douglas Munenga and Timothy Kabwe. For Joseph to finish as champion speaks volumes about the progress we are making.”
According the statement, Mwale’s victory earned him 25,000 Zambian Kwacha (about US$1,400).
The reigning Malawi Open Champion is gearing up to defend the title in August.
