Malawi Govt Recruits 1,100 Secondary School Teachers

The Malawi Government has announced that it has recruited 1,100 secondary school teachers out of 9,900 who applied.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka said in a statement marking the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day on 5 October that the recruits would start between October and December this year.

Msaka said the recruitment was part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the teaching profession and improve the quality of education.

The Minister said the government recognises that quality education depends on well-prepared, competent and motivated teachers, describing teachers as central to Malawi’s human capital development.

“Teachers are at the heart of Malawi’s human capital development,” he said.

Msaka said the government was therefore committed to strengthening teacher education, continuous professional development and professional standards to ensure teachers are prepared for the changing demands of the profession.

He said the recruitment underlines the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the teaching profession as a key step towards achieving Malawi’s aspirations under Malawi 2063.

He said Malawi would not achieve its Malawi 2063 aspirations without strengthening the teaching profession and ensuring teachers are well prepared, supported and professionally developed.

Msaka made the remarks in a ministerial statement marking World Teachers’ Day 2026, which is being commemorated under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

He said teachers are at the centre of the country’s human capital development because they shape the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes of children and young people who will form Malawi’s future workforce.
