Malawi Eliminates National ID Expiry Date

Malawi citizens will no longer be required to renew the National Identity card following the government’s move to remove expiry of the card as it was before.

Ministry of Homeland Affairs Peter Mukhitho announced the good news during National Registration Bureau’s (NRB) Nzika Digital Wallet launch at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

The Minister said the move would help to address the challenges and hurdles that citizens have been facing to acquire the ID as well as saving on renewal fees.

“I would like to announce that from now onwards, National ID will no longer expire. Once they acquire it, they will not be required to renew it as it has been the case. This will ease the burden of paying renewal fees. It will also do away with the inconveniences that they face in the course of renewing,” said Mukhitho.

He said the move is in line with the government’s initiative to ensure that many citizens are registered and identified when they need to access services such as banking.
