LUANAR Graduate Turns Setbacks Into Success

A Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) graduate, Francis Kandodo is using knowledge he obtained from university to transform his life economically through farming.

Kandodo, who graduated from LUANAR in 2022 with a degree, is now on course to become successful after establising a farming enterprise that specialises in the cultivation of Cassava, Banana and Vegetables.

The 28-year-old Mulanje-based agriprenuer has said he decided to venture into farming after being frustrated with a lack of job opportunities.

“I left LUANAR with hope that I will land a good job and become successful, but life had other plans because I spent months hunting for opportunities that never came,” he said.

The development, however, did not stop him from dreaming big as he decided to use the knowledge he got in lecture rooms to launch a farming venture that uses organic ways of farming.

“In LUANAR, we are taught on how we can harvest more using organic methods of farming and my farming venture hinged on that notion,” said Kandodo.

What started as a small venture on a 0.3 acres of land has now grown into a thriving enterprise that has allowed Kandodo to own over two acres of land.

“Using profits I’ve been getting, I have also purchased a water pump that has significantly boosted my irrigation farming,” he added.

Asked on where he got funds to launch his venture, the agriprenuer said he kept money he was getting from piece works.

He has since indicated that he has abandoned plans to hunt for job opportunities, saying his wish is to see his venture thrive and able to employ others.

Lilongwe-based renowned agriprenuer Maloto Chimkombero has hailed Kandodo, describing his exploits as commendable.
