Lilongwe Girls Shine Bright at 2025 ATEM Drama Finals

Lilongwe Girls Secondary School has claimed this year’s Association for the Teaching of English in Malawi (ATEM) national drama crown and received K2 million.

The competition, held at Kamuzu Institute Hall in Lilongwe, brought together 18 best secondary school drama teams.

Schools such as High Profile Secondary School, Nkhatabay Boys, Stella Maris Girls, Nkhotakota Secondary and the eventual winners Lilongwe Girls, brought colour, creativity in a thrilling artistic battle.

Stella Maris Girls Secondary School secured second place, earning K1.5 million, while St Maria Goretti came in third with K1 million. Chichiri Secondary School took fourth place with a K800,000 prize, and Kamuzu Barracks finished fifth, pocketing K500,000.

The drama finals also celebrated individual brilliance. Julio Band from Lilongwe Girls took home the Best Actress award, further solidifying the school’s dominance this year. Deborah Thawani also from Lilongwe Girls, was named Best Supporting Actress.

“I feel honoured to be recognised. It’s been weeks of hard work, rehearsals and dedication. This award is for all my teammates,” said Julio Band after receiving her accolade.

From Chichiri Secondary School, Praise Nkhata emerged Best Supporting Actor, while Best Actor went to Lloyd Mauwa from Pius XII Seminary. Stella Maris’ Asante Banda was named Best English Speaker.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, ATEM Chairperson Davie Mpaso, applauded the participating schools for their creativity and the powerful themes showcased on stage.

“These performances are more than just entertainment. They are a mirror to our society. The youth have used drama to raise critical issues affecting their communities while showcasing exceptional talent,” he said.

The 2025 ATEM competition was proudly sponsored by Standard Bank Malawi through its Joy of the Arts initiative in collaboration with MobiSchool, which supported efforts to promote education through arts.
