Likoma Island Festival promotes Plastic Use

Organisers of the Likoma Island Festival say this year’s event will go beyond entertainment and tourism by promoting environmental protection, particularly reducing the use of thin plastics.

Festival Marketing and Communications Officer, Kondwani Nyamasauka, said the initiative aims to ensure the event sets an example in environmental conservation while continuing to attract visitors.

Nyamasauka said people should expect a better festival this year, as preparations are at an advanced stage, with organisers putting in place various improvements to enhance the experience.

Among the measures, organisers have introduced reusable cloth bags expected to replace plastic packaging, and will work with security personnel to enforce environmentally friendly practices throughout the event.

Meanwhile, Likoma District Council spokesperson, Irene Mseteka, has welcomed the initiative, saying it aligns with the council’s efforts to promote proper waste management and protect the island’s environment.

Mseteka said reducing plastic use is key to preserving Likoma’s natural beauty, which is vital for both community wellbeing and tourism growth, urging residents and visitors to support the initiative during and beyond the festival period.

The festival, which is an annual event, also promotes local talent, including traditional dances, music and other cultural activities.

This year’s edition is scheduled to take place from October 15 to 18.
