Hope Chisanu Honoured Posthumously at Malawi Film Festival

The late Hope Chisanu, a trailblazer in Malawi’s film and entertainment industry, was posthumously celebrated with a Lifetime Achiever Award at the 2024 Malawi Film Festival held in Lilongwe from November 29 to 30.

The honour was presented by veteran filmmaker Peter Mazunda, who hailed Chisanu as a mentor and pioneer whose impact spanned stage, television, radio, and film.

Chisanu’s widow, Vivien, received the award, describing her husband’s remarkable ability to connect with audiences.

“Hope had a unique ability to bring characters to life, to make us laugh, cry, and reflect,” she said, adding that his legacy continues to inspire.

Chisanu, renowned for roles in critically acclaimed films such as The Last Fishing Boat and Seasons of a Life, died on June 1 2024 in the United States, where he had been residing since 2023.

The festival, now in its third edition since its inception in 2022, also honoured a variety of talent across the industry.

Highlights included Dear Ex-winning Best TV Series and The Devil in Me clinching Best Story.

The Zambian film Bukata won Best Feature Film, while Justice took home awards for Best Editing, Best Sound and Best Directing.

Rising stars were also in the spotlight, with Chikonzero Chakama and Victor Kapwiti Ngawe named Best Up-and-coming Actress and Actor, respectively.

Mada Kafamtenga and Innocent Manyera claimed Best Actress and Actor awards, further showcasing the depth of talent emerging from Malawi’s film industry.

As the curtains closed, the festival reinforced its role as a platform to celebrate the nation’s cinematic excellence while honoring icons like Chisanu, whose contributions laid the foundation for the thriving local industry.
