World football governing body FIFA is expected to provide $2.5 million, approximately K4.3 billion, to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to support the Scorchers’ preparations for the World Cup in Brazil next year.
FIFA confirmed the development in a statement released on Thursday.
According to the statement, the funding is part of FIFA’s support package for all qualified teams ahead of the prestigious tournament.
“The same amount of money will also be provided to other teams that succeeded in qualifying for the World Cup,” FIFA said in the statement.
FIFA further disclosed that an undisclosed bonus or allowance will also be given to every Scorchers player who will take part in the tournament.
“An undisclosed bonus or allowance will also be given to every Scorchers player who will take part in the prestigious tournament,” FIFA added.
The Scorchers are making a historic debut in the competition after qualifying following an exceptional performance at the WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
The funding is expected to boost Malawi’s preparations as the Scorchers aim to make a mark on the world stage.
Renowned football analyst, Twaha Munthali has since urged FAM to use the funding prudently.
“We hope this funding will help FAM organise some serious strength testing matches in readiness for the tournament,” said Munthali said.
