Malawian computer expert and game developer Ekari Ngalawesa is turning stories and myths from Malawi’s cultural heritage into an interactive video game called Finding Erika: Legend of the Wildflower.
The idea was inspired by Ekari’s passion for storytelling and the stories he heard while growing up, including myths surrounding Mulanje Mountain. He says many of these stories are rarely represented in digital media, inspiring him to use technology to bring them to life through an interactive experience.
Finding Erika: Legend of the Wildflower combines exploration, simple puzzles, player choices and combat encounters inspired by local myths. Players interact with the environment, uncover hidden stories and face challenges that test their decision-making and skills.
Ekari says his studies in Innovation at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) also played a role in developing his skills. He credits the university environment with giving him knowledge in game design and development while encouraging collaboration, experimentation and problem-solving.
In a post on its LinkedIn page, MUST describes Ekari as a 2025 graduate of its Master of Science in Innovation programme and says feedback from lecturers and fellow students helped him refine his ideas. The university says the game reflects how its graduates can apply innovation and technology to celebrate Malawi’s heritage while creating new forms of storytelling.
Technology entrepreneur and mentor Nthanda Manduwi has also worked with Ekari through the Kwathu Kollective, where she recently identified him among a group of people who supported her in coaching and mentoring students. She further described Ekari as one of the best innovators Malawi could ever have.
Finding Erika: Legend of the Wildflower is expected to be released in December 2026, giving audiences an opportunity to experience Malawi-inspired stories through an interactive digital platform.
