The Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) has announced the completion of arrangements to begin distributing royalties collected through the Blank Media Levy for the period covering April 2024 to March 2025.
According to a press release issued by the institution, the distribution will start on 8 July 2025 at from the COSOMA offices in Lilongwe.
The total amount to be distributed this year stands at K1,566,900,454.95, which represents a significant rise from the K917 million disbursed during the previous cycle.
The increase reflects COSOMA’s continued efforts to enhance collection and ensure creators benefit from the use of their works.
Out of the total figure, K1,044,600,303.30 has been allocated to 2,959 beneficiaries under the category of musical works, while K522,300,151.65 will be distributed to 565 beneficiaries under literary works. In total, 3,524 rights holders will benefit from the distribution.
COSOMA emphasised that all funds will be disbursed through Arts SACCO and that each member collecting royalties must present valid proof of membership or identification.
The society has encouraged members to show up on the specified date and time to facilitate a smooth distribution process.
The society reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and fairness in handling artists’ royalties and assured its members of continued support in protecting their intellectual property rights.
