Chawinga Sisters Fire Scorchers to Victory Over Zimbabwe

Two goals from the Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, were enough to secure a 2-0 first leg win for the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, against Zimbabwe on Friday.

The match was played at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe as part of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers.

Temwa Chawinga was the first to break the deadlock in the 33rd minute through an assist from her elder sister Tabitha.

The sisters switched roles in the second half, with Tabitha doubling the lead in the 50th minute through an assist from Temwa.

The win cements the Scorchers’ lead ahead of the second leg next week in Zimbabwe.

Speaking after the match, Scorchers Head Coach Lovemore Fazili expressed happiness with the result and the performance of his team.

“We are very happy with this win because the girls played according to our plan and the Chawinga sisters showed why they are world-class players,” said Fazili.

He further said the team will not relax despite the first leg advantage, adding that they will go to Zimbabwe to finish the job.

“We have a good lead but the job is not done yet and we will prepare well for the second leg,” Fazili said.

Meanwhile, the win has set the tone for a weekend of joy among the fans in the country.
