Music lovers across Malawi have expressed excitement after organisers of the Sand Music Festival announced that this year’s event will be held at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi in September this year, marking the festival’s return after a two-year break.
The festival was suspended following the death of its founder, soldier Lucius Banda, in 2024. His passing left many fans uncertain about the future of one of Malawi’s biggest music events.
One music fan, Akuzike Zim’there, said the announcement has rekindled excitement among festival followers.
“We have missed the Sand Music Festival for the past two years. Hearing that it is coming back is exciting news for many of us. The festival was more than just entertainment; it brought people together and celebrated Malawian music,” said Zim’there.
He added that the festival’s return is a fitting tribute to Lucius Banda, whose vision helped transform the event into one of Malawi’s most anticipated entertainment gatherings, attracting music lovers from across the country and beyond.
The Sand Music Festival has over the years provided a platform for both established and upcoming artists while promoting tourism and local business.
Many fans believe this year’s edition will not only revive cherished memories but also celebrate the lasting legacy of Lucius Banda in Malawi’s music industry.
