Minister of Labour, Skills Development and Innovations Joel Chigona has urged technical colleges in Malawi to be innovative.
He said this during a familiarisation tour at Soche Technical College in Blantyre to appreciate the role that Malawi’s oldest technical college has played.
Chigona also appealed to the colleges to come up with programmes in line with government development blueprint Malawi 2063.
Said the minister: “We are all aware that the government of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is striving to change Malawi from a predominantly consuming country to a producing and exporting one. This is only possible if we have a skills set to support Malawi Vision 2063 enabler number 5; Human Capital Development under Education and Skills Development.
“I will be happy to see more colleges introducing more training programmes and innovations that respond to the government agenda.”
He cited offering programmes in artisanal mining to support small and medium enterprises in the mining sector, agricultural machinations to support farming and food production and tour guide to support tourism.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Skills Development and Innovations Nwazi Mnthambala said technical colleges are crucial to the development of the country.

Automobile Machanics and Fabrication and Welding.
During the tour, the Minister and his entourage also inspected the K2.7 billion construction of a one-storey workshop project which is funded by World Bank through Savings for Vibrant programme.
