Nsanje District Council Drills Youths In Vocational Skills

The Nsanje District Council has rolled out a programme aimed at transforming the lives of 75 out-of-school youths through vocational skills training, with support from UNICEF.

According to the district youth officer, Gertrude Francisco, the initiative is designed to empower young people with practical skills to help them earn a living and stay away from destructive behaviours.

“Upon completion, the youths will receive starter packs to kickstart their businesses,” said Francisco.

The beneficiaries, drawn from the three traditional authorities of Mlolo, Malemia and Ndamera, are being trained in trades such as welding, tailoring, carpentry, electrical installation and hairdressing.

One of them, 18-year-old Precious Pulayezi from Mtendere Youth Club, who is undergoing training in welding, said the skills will help her open a welding workshop to support her family.

“I am excited because I now see a future where I can be independent and also help others,” Pulayezi said.

Through the initiative, the council hopes to address unemployment and build resilience among young people while contributing to community development in Nsanje.
