Save the Children pumps K2.2 billion into child rights promotion

Save the Children, through the Abwenzi A Ana Programme, has announced that it will spend over K2.2 billion this year in Ntcheu District to support government efforts in promoting and protecting the rights of children.

Speaking during the handover of 680 desks at Mphepozinayi Primary School, Abwenzi A Ana Programme Manager, Esther Gama, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s strong commitment to improving the welfare of children.

“This year alone, we are investing over K2.2 billion in interventions that promote children’s rights and wellbeing. We want every child, especially girls, to learn with dignity and be protected from violence, exploitation and discrimination,” said Gama.

Receiving the donation, Director of Education, Youth and Sports in Ntcheu, Catherine Gobola Gunde, described the gesture as timely in addressing some of the challenges that affect learners.

“These desks will help to improve learning conditions in schools and most importantly, they will contribute to retaining girls in school who often drop out due to poor facilities,”said Gunde.

One of the beneficiaries, Sellah, a 14-year-old Standard 8 learner at Mphepozinayi Primary School, expressed her gratitude, saying she now feels more motivated to excel in her studies.

“I am happy because of the desks. They will motivate us to work hard in class and also help us to stay clean at school. I want to use this chance to work extra hard so that one day I can achieve my dream of becoming a doctor,” said Sellah.

The desks, worth K90 million, have been distributed to 12 primary schools in the district under the Abwenzi A Ana Programme, which is being implemented by Save the Children in partnership with Future for All, Rays of Hope and YODEP.
