A team of five innovators has emerged winner of a special competition called “Innovative School Desk Designs” run by UNICEF in association with Mhub.
The competition brought together best innovators in the country who battled out to come up with a user-centered, refined and eco-friendly desk concept.
The winning team, led by Chris Kaliati won the competition after coming up with a desk concept called “ModuRe Desk”.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony held Friday in Lilongwe, Mhub project officer Hubert Magombo said the ModuRe Desk concept emerged winner for being inclusive and sustainable.
“This design has been specifically selected for its built-in storage concept, ability to be accessible by children using wheelchairs and it’s curved front access,” he said.
Magombo said the design has been recommended for mass production and supply to selected schools locally.
“UNICEF will work with relevant authorities to support the production and distribution of these desks to schools,” said Magombo.
Speaking on behalf of the winners, team leader Chris Kaliati expressed excitement with the victory.
“We are happy that our concept has made it and we believe it will go a long way towards improving education standards in schools,” he said.
The winning design was developed by five innovators Chris Kaliati, Joshua Ben, Upile Matululu, Hope Khasu and Umar Maulidi.
The design fended off competition from five other finalists that were selected from a pool of 15 brilliant concepts.
